Contactless charging is increasingly finding its way into the area of mobile devices. The advantages are obvious. Thanks to the universal interface, charging cables and charging sockets on devices are often no longer necessary. Whether in the car, at work or at home, contactless charging is future-proof and haptic.

In 2008, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) began a major effort to develop what is now known as the Qi standard for contactless charging. In 2010, the first version 1.0.1 was available and has been evolving ever since. In 2018, version 1.2.4 is the reference worldwide with the Baseline Power Profile (BPP) for safe charging up to 5 W.

As part of its continuous laboratory development, IBL-Lab GmbH decided to build up its competence and performance for accompanied development and conformal testing in a specially created area.

By the end of November 2021, negotiations for the procurement of the test equipment from the WPC-verified test equipment manufacturer were completed. The Swedish-based manufacturer nok9 provided installation support and in-house training.

Since 2022, IBL-Lab GmbH participates as a regular member in the standards development process and provides supports to technical questions. In March 2022, the laboratory was recognized as an Authorized Test Lab (ATL).

To be both present on the market despite an increased number of products and promptly, reliably and timely acquire approval for these is associated with great pressure and still essential for manufacturers.

In this context, the relevance of pre-tests is becoming ever greater. They offer enormous advantages for the fast approval process already in the development phase of products as well as shortly before the official certification of the devices.

In the context of development-accompanying tests, the results of the pre-tests can provide indications for design improvements. In particular, this concerns foreign object detection (FOD), which is enormously relevant in wireless charging, and the maximum delivered/transmitted power. Pre-tests spare manufacturers surprises and possible delays due to unexpected results in the mandatory tests, so that there is no delay shortly before the planned market launch.

Pre-tests are possible without having to provide the large amount of formal information required for official certification, so that the administrative effort required to conduct the pre-tests is low. Similarly, conducting pre-tests already generates a large amount of technical and administrative information that can be used for the later certification process. This may reduce the formal effort required in the official certification process. We can simulate tests that go beyond the regulatory requirements. These are used to identify "worst case scenarios" and a check of the basic interoperability of the devices. Pre-tests are therefore a factor that should not be underestimated in the context of an approval of devices that use the Qi standards. This is particularly true if they are carried out at an official Qi approval laboratory and all the information about the test specimens and pre-test results is already available.
